What Does Albizia Mean?
The Albizia Tree
Our company is named after the albizia tree, well known in the Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions and other larger farming areas. Known most widely for its role in companion farming, albizia trees are commonly used on farms because their wide reaching branches provide shade for the other plants.
Albizia trees have a long and lengthy history in Tanzania. Since the 18th century, albizia trees were most often used on coffee plantations where the albizia trees would shade rows upon rows of coffee plants and assist in maintaining water in the soil. In addition, the leaves of albizia trees are smaller than those of other trees. This helps them decompose faster, helping generate more nutrient-rich, compostable soil for farmers to use.
Albizia trees thrive alongside other plants, and in turn help other plants thrive, assisting in creating a productive and sustainable ecosystem. Ultimately, albizia trees exemplify the spirit of mutual benefit and connectivity that we hope to inspire with our tours.
